iCloud metallic iconiCloud provides Apple users with an easy-to-use (and free) method for backing up and accessing your music, photos, calendars, contacts, and documents across multiple devices. Photo Stream can sync photos between multiple devices almost instantaneously, and with the Find My iPhone feature, you can locate your device in the event it becomes lost.

As a result of iCloud’s introduction, Apple will phase out all MobileMe services on June 30, 2012. This article we will outline the process by which users of Apple’s MobileMe online services can safely transition to the more robust and feature-rich world of iCloud.

Your computer or mobile device will need to meet the following requirements*:

• iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices require the iOS 5 operating system.

• Macs require OS X Lion operating system.

• Windows-based computers require Windows 7 or Vista (Service Pack 2 or later).

*If you are unsure about your device or computers eligibility for iCloud, please come in and discuss it with our Apple Specialists.

To begin the process of transitioning your MobileMe account, visit me.com/move and log in with your MobileMe e-mail address and password.

After that, just follow the on-screen prompts. You’ll want to make sure that by this point at least one of your devices has up-to-date contacts and bookmarks, and that you’ve manually backed-up your contacts, calendars, and bookmarks. Detailed instructions for backing up those items can be found here.

For Gallery, iDisk, or iWeb users

You can sync your Gallery images directly from iPhoto by adding your Gallery information into iPhoto’s Preference window.

Alternatively, you can download your photos directly from Gallery and import them into iPhoto.

There are a number of image-hosting sites to choose from that are excellent replacements for MobileMe Gallery. Flickr, ZangZing, DPHOTO, and SmugMug are some of the more common alternatives.

iDisk users will need to manually download or backup all files stored on that service. Simply drag-and-drop the files from your iDisk into a folder somewhere on your computer. Users looking for alternative providers of online storage may consider Dropbox, SugarSync, Box, Microsoft SkyDrive, or SpiderOak.

Detailed instructions for transferring your iWeb site to another provider can be found here. Sites such as Squarespace, WordPress, Blogger, and Drupal Gardens offer similar, easy-to-use experiences.

Keychain2Go and 1Password offer excellent alternatives to MobileMe Keychain Sync.
